Three Strategies for Coaching Difficult Employees to Success

If you’re tasked with management at your organization, you probably know firsthand how challenging it can be to oversee difficult employees. Fortunately, the right coaching strategies can significantly benefit even the most trying employees, ultimately changing the trajectory of productivity and performance for the better.  From improving communication to enhancing culture, here are three strategies that can turn obstacles into growth opportunities for struggling team members:

Increase communication with employees.

When communication within an organization is lacking, it’s common for engagement among employees to suffer. To combat poor engagement, it’s essential to establish open lines of communication among all members of your company, from leadership teams to entry-level staff. Fostering an open and transparent dialogue will play a major role in addressing the issues of your most difficult employees. For example, scheduling monthly check-in meetings provides an opportunity for employees to express their concerns and discuss any challenges with their managers in private. This allows management to take the necessary steps to rectify problems that may be causing an employee’s problems in the workplace – such as ineffective onboarding practices or an interpersonal conflict.

Boost internal training and support.

If employees don’t feel adequately supported in their roles, they can quickly become unmotivated or resentful, harming morale among all staff. There are a multitude of ways in which you can boost support within your company, such as assigning mentors to guide employees in various parts of their jobs or providing specialized training to help employees gain required workforce skills. These initiatives can be instrumental in elevating employees’ confidence, encouraging teambuilding, and creating more trust. As a result, employees will experience greater job satisfaction and display a stronger willingness to meet expectations and perform their best.

Focus on culture-building.

If you suspect that a toxic work environment is contributing to your employees’ problems, it’s critical to address your culture. Taking measures to proactively improve aspects of your culture will naturally reshape your employees’ attitudes and create a more positive and inspiring atmosphere. Examples of ways to enhance your company culture include implementing employee recognition programs; establishing flexible work arrangements; and prioritizing employees’ mental health and wellness. These types of initiatives are impactful for reversing poor cultural practices and building a workplace in which all employees feel empowered to thrive.

With these key practices, you can effectively support even your most difficult employees, providing your entire team with the guidance and tools to achieve long-term success at your organization.
