Three Reasons Why Your Career Growth May Have Stalled

Does it seem like your career growth has come to a halt over the past several months or years? If you believe your career has hit a plateau, it’s time to take a step back and reflect on some of the choices that may be detrimental to your advancement and future success. As you think about your current career status, consider these common reasons why you may be unknowingly stalling your growth:

You’ve stopped setting and tracking goals.

If it’s hard to remember the last time you set a goal – and held yourself accountable to achieving it – meaningful goal-setting should be one of the first steps you take. Setting short-term goals (goals that take less than six months to achieve) and long-term goals (goals that take more than six months to achieve) is critical for keeping you focused on achieving milestones that further your career. A major part of effective goal-setting involves communicating with your boss or manager about your vision for yourself at the company and understanding how you can bring it to life.

You don’t seek mentors.

Receiving guidance from a mentor in your industry can be transformative not only for you professionally, but personally as well. Seeking mentors in the workplace or in your network to provide objective insights and feedback about your performance will hold you more accountable to your goals while providing support to continue advancing in your career. Mentorship is paramount for building confidence and learning from mistakes, offering much-needed support as you navigate challenges along the way.

You’ve neglected networking and professional development.

If you haven’t acquired any new skills or expanded your network much over the past year, chances are you’ve been neglecting your professional development. While it can be easy to fall into a routine of not going to networking events or furthering your education, failing to make professional development part of your career growth plan is a huge mistake! You can revamp your efforts by participating in relevant industry organizations, following and connecting with colleagues on social media networks, and working with a staffing firm on finding new employment opportunities.

Your career is ultimately in your hands, so what are you waiting for? If you’re guilty of stalling your career for any of the reasons above, reversing these bad behaviors can help you turn your life around and create better habits moving forward.
