Laid Off? Three Quick Tips to Find Your Next Gig

If you’ve recently been laid off, you may be feeling overwhelmed or unmotivated to embark on a job search. However, with layoffs occurring in virtually every industry, remember you’re not alone! Fortunately, there are some easy steps you can take to put your career back in the right direction. Here are some quick tips for how to get over your layoff and quickly find your next gig:

Prepare references.

After getting laid off, one of the most important things you can do is gather at least two or three professional references. As you apply to new jobs, chances are you’ll need to provide a set of references to accompany your application materials. If you don’t feel comfortable reaching out to your former boss, consider other past employers. References can be former managers, coworkers, and even industry colleagues whom you’ve worked with in a professional setting. Sometimes reaching out to references can be time-consuming, which is why it’s best to begin this process right away. Always make sure every reference is briefed about your employment circumstances and prepared to speak to your qualifications. In some cases, your references may even be able to connect you with valuable connections or job openings.

Refresh your digital presence.

With the majority of employers turning to social media to seek and vet candidates, taking time to refresh your digital presence is a necessity! Updating your LinkedIn profile, posting current content, and actively connecting with employers, will accelerate your job search results and allow you to gain more traction among hiring managers. As you navigate the job market, be sure to “follow” employers online and research their workplace practices, cultures, and values. This will help you prepare for interviews and determine which types of jobs align most with your interests.

Re-evaluate your career goals.

Sometimes a layoff can prompt some much-needed career reflection. Before making the leap to a new job right away, don’t be afraid to do some reflection and consider your future career goals. For example, have you been wanting more flexibility and work-life balance? Are you interested in a new industry or field? Does a different type of workplace culture appeal to you? Asking yourself these questions will allow you to strategize your job search and ensure you make the best decision for the next position you accept.

While getting laid off can be stressful and unexpected, taking the steps above can get your career back on track with minimal roadblocks. In no time, you’ll be gainfully employed again and on your way to a successful future with a new employer!
