Three Confidence Tips for Your Next Interview

Are you excited for future interviews, but feeling a bit nervous and overwhelmed too? It’s normal to feel apprehensive before any interview, especially if it’s been a long time since you’ve been on the job market. Fortunately, there are ways in which you can prepare for an interview while keeping your nerves at bay. If you’re in need of a confidence boost, follow these three tips:

Research the employer.

When it comes to interview success, knowledge truly is power. By thoroughly researching the employer in advance of your interview, you can gain the necessary information and insights to answer questions in a thoughtful and meaningful way. In addition to understanding the job opportunity itself, educating yourself about the employer’s workplace culture, mission, and values is essential for speaking intelligently about how you would fit within the organization.

Do an interview rehearsal.

No matter how prepared you may feel for an interview, nothing replaces the practice of rehearsal. Conducting an interview rehearsal in which somebody asks you mock interview questions can be one of the most powerful ways to mentally prepare and work on your responses ahead of time. Videotaping or recording yourself can also be extremely beneficial, as watching your interview performance back will help you see firsthand ways in which you can improve both your verbal and nonverbal communication.

Don’t overprepare.

Staying up late the night before an interview to prepare is one of the worst things you can do for your mental and physical state! While preparation is always important, overpreparing can leave you tired and exhausted before the interview even begins. It may also result in you becoming overly rehearsed in your interview responses, in which you fail to demonstrate genuine interest and authenticity.

Taking steps to build your confidence will set you up for optimal interview performance, especially as you apply to multiple jobs.
